I’m writing this entry while listening to my OPM rock playlist.
I thought of writing about music because of an incident that happened last Saturday. While I was folding our clothes, I was listening to Tyla’s “She did it again.”
My husband laughed and told me how I told him in the past (before we became a thing) that I only listen to songs that aren’t synthesised. Songs that you can hear the instruments in the background.
It made me chuckle, too. My music taste has gone through a lot that I don’t even know what my music genre is now. It’s all over the place.
I usually just listen to whatever my mom and dad were playing on the player. My dad would mostly listen to soft rock songs from the ’80s and the ’90s. My mom specifically loved diva hits, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Regine Velasquez. Anything that makes you scream, that’s her jam.
Quick anecdote: I saw a dude listening to walkman on the subway last week, and I thought it was awesome.
Then, I got introduced to OPM thanks to the radio. OPM was my driving force for concentration back in high school. I knew every lyric, I knew every tune. I even learned guitar with Huling El Bimbo.
Tagalog rock songs from the 2000s are the theme songs to my high school life: from my first heart ache, to my friendships, and so on… Putting them on my music for a day takes me back to a life where I thought making a boy have a crush on you was the most important thing. It was so stupid.
At that time, I also got into Wattpad a lot, and I got introduced to Kpop beyond Super Junior’s “Sorry sorry.”
Kpop dominated my playlist from my 1st to 3rd year in college. I would sing them, dance to them. Heck, I even learned Korean because I was that deep into the K-world. That was my identity.
Then came the resurgence of Filipino bands. I went with it as well. I would go to different gigs, listen to the most underrated independent musicians, get recommendations, and so on… It was tiring, a tad bit expensive, but it was amazing to see how much talent there is at home.
When I graduated and started working, I don’t think I had another “identity” when it came to music. I’ve been listening to everything. From the 60s to the most recent songs, I just listen to whatever is there.
Currently though, I’ve been loving XG and Ariana Grande. I’ve been loving songs that make me dance. I don’t have anything in particular that would make me identify to it, but if a song moves me like literally, I’d probably like it.
I used to be so serious about music. As someone who liked singing, I always had it in my mind that I’d like people to view as someone who only listens to ”proper music” whatever the hell that is. Now, let’s just say “random” is the best adjective that fits me.
