I recently wrote about my insignificant relationship to music. My thoughts still hold true when it comes to films. I mentioned in my entry about the Before Trilogy that my current interest in crime films is what holds me back from watching it. However dim my current watchlist may seem, I am no stranger to colourful, fun films that’ll make you stand up and shake your hips.

My top 3 films with the best soundtracks are:

1. Trolls
2. Shrek 2
3. 3 Idiots

Trolls

I remember watching Trolls one boring afternoon at home. I was in such a dark place. Figuratively, because I was in my early 20s, and I so desperately wanted to get out of our home. Literally, because I hated turning the lights on in my room.

I didn’t have a subscription to any streaming services then, but I saw a pirated copy of Trolls on my old high school laptop, and I had the time to spare, so why not?

I bawled my eyes out after watching. “True Colors” never felt so touching until I heard it from Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, who I’m not a fan of, but the talent is undeniable.

I was moving my shoulders to all the funky songs the trolls were singing, even the one Bridget sang. 

I am in love with how all the trolls are performers. It brought out the theatre kid in me that never was. 

Shrek 2

Out of all the Shrek films, we only had a DVD of the 2nd film. Despite the scarce entertainment option, I ate the Shrek 2 film up every time I had a chance. My dad was livid. 

I watch it while doing assignments. I watch it while eating. I watch it before sleeping. I love Shrek 2.

I rewatched it again yesterday during my shift, and I have to admit, it still has the same, if not better, effect on me as it did in my youth. I do think it got funnier in my older brain.

I still know when the songs come in. I still know who sings what. I still know how the closing song goes.

Every song chosen for this film was on point! I still feel like being welcomed by the royal family whenever I hear “Funky Town.” More importantly, I can never hear the original version of “Livin’ La Vida Loca” without hearing Antonio Banderas and Eddie Murphy.

3 Idiots

3 Idiots is a staple feel-good movie of mine from my teens. Not only because of its story, but because every time I hear “Zoobi-Doobi,” you better believe I’ll get on my feet and dance! 

“Aal izz well” is a banger, too! It’s been a phrase I repeat often as a student, especially when things get just get too much.

I would say, most Bollywood films have great soundtracks! I had a Bollywood phase where I would devour all Bollywood films available on Netflix (I got a free plan because of work lol).

I still go back to these masterpieces whenever life gets down sometimes. Even when I feel like I don’t have time to sit still and fix my eyes on the screen, I’m fortunate to have songs to accompany me and remind me of them.
